Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

A musculoskeletal injury is generally caused by day-to-day activity, but often from more strenuous movement or even an accident such as a fall. The most common conditions we see include back and neck pain, knee injuries and shoulder dysfunction.

In order to restore a maximum level of function, we take the time to do a thorough assessment of the presenting injury, including all the contributing factors. Early assessment and diagnosis is vital in the successful management of musculoskeletal injuries so that functional impairment is minimized, allowing for a quicker return to normal.

  • Acute and chronic pain management

  • Individualised strengthening programs

  • Physiotherapy exercises

  • Spinal and core rehabilitation

  • Postural, gait, balance and co-ordination re-training

  • Manual mobilisation of tissues and joints

  • Taping

  • Stretching programs

  • Dry Needling

No matter what your circumstance, we can provide a treatment plan to help you recover.

Hydrotherapy

Exercise is performed within warm water and provides opportunity for individual progressions within a safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment. Hydrotherapy is significantly different from conventional swimming and aquarobics. The exercises and movements are catered for each individual client to address their discussed goals. Hydrotherapy is often less strenuous than land-based exercises, focusing on guided, controlled, pain free movements.

Some of the common conditions that benefit from hydrotherapy include osteoarthritis, general joint pain, pre/post operational rehabilitation, neurological conditions, fibromyalgia and improving general fitness.
The primary benefits of hydrotherapy:

  • Reduces load bearing on joints.

  • Increases muscle strength

  • Improves cardiovascular fitness

  • Improves balance and reduces falls risk

GT Physiotherapy has a special interest in aquatic exercise and for over 23 years, Greg has been providing hydrotherapy sessions. You do not need to be able to swim to benefit from hydrotherapy. The effects of resistance and buoyancy combined with the soothing properties of warm water helps reduce pain and muscle spasm and assists in the return joint range of motion, muscle length and strength.

Sessions are conducted at the Colmslie Pool, 400 Lytton Rd, Morningside. Although, other pools/locations can be accessed when required.

Pre and Post-op / Hospital Rehabilitation

The need for rehabilitation after surgery is often well appreciated, the importance of exercising before surgery is often overlooked. At GT Physiotherapy, we specialise in Pre and Post Operative Physiotherapy. We help patients physically prepare for surgery, with a focus on enhanced recovery post surgery. Often there are months of pain and reduced activity leading up to surgery where muscles become weaker, mobility and balance decline and exercise tolerance deteriorate. A body that is healthy leading into an operation will usually respond much faster in the post-recovery process.

Your post-operative therapy is always personalised according to your surgery protocols and specific recovery goals. Rehabilitation may include:

  • Muscle strengthening

  • Improving joint range of motion

  • Development of gentle home exercise programs for fitness

  • Cardiac rehabilitation

  • Mobility and gait education, including stairs.

  • Appropriate mobility aid selection and progression

  • Techniques and education to manage safely at home

We place a strong focus on education, exercise, and manual therapy to help you regain movement, strength and normal function, getting you back to the tasks you enjoy promptly and safely. Contact us to discuss your surgery and how we can help you through the recovery process.

Sports, Remedial & Relaxation Massage

Massage is used to describe a wide variety of techniques that vary in the manner in which touch, pressure and the intensity of the treatment is applied. At GT Physiotherapy, we focus massage therapy on the following three areas.

Sports-Remedial-Relaxation-Massage
remedial icn

Remedial - is the objective assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of the signs, symptoms and causes of biomechanical dysfunction or injury, using specific mobilisation techniques, in order to restore normal health and function.

sports icn

Sports – this is an application of massage, not a particular massage technique. The type of technique or treatment applied is dependent on the stage of training or competition, sports injury or condition. Sport massage is a blend of techniques that aim to enhance performance and help overworked muscles to recover quickly.

remedial icn

Relaxation – also known as Therapeutic or Swedish massage. One of the most popular forms of massage in Australia, this technique is designed to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.

Massage may be effective in assisting to manage conditions such as:

  • subacute/chronic low pain

  • delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)

  • anxiety

  • stress

  • soft tissue injuries

  • high blood pressure

  • insomnia

One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Make an Enquiry

Some of the physical benefits of massage include:

  • reduced muscle tension

  • improved circulation

  • stimulation of the lymphatic system

  • reduction of stress hormones

  • relaxation

  • increased joint mobility and flexibility

  • improved recovery of soft tissue injuries

  • reduced anxiety and depression.

GT Physiotherapy, while incorporating massage into most physio treatment sessions, offers remedial, sports and relaxation massage as a standalone service.

Fall Prevention & Balance Education

One of the leading health concerns for people over the age of 65, is falling. This is often closely associated with a deterioration with balance. In fact, up to 40% of this age group, who still live in their own home, experience at least one fall per year. At GT Physiotherapy, major efforts are devoted to determining the cause of falls at home or while in the community, thereby lessening the risk of this significant health concern in our older clients.

In short, we are committed to helping our ageing population stay safe, mobile and independent in their own home by providing a pro-active approach to fall prevention, using our three-step approach:

  • Education and exercise plan

  • Strength and stretching program

  • Mobility aid selection and its correct use

By developing a personalised balance and mobility program with a client, we not only improve confidence with mobility, but greatly reduce the chance of further falls.

Dry Needling

Research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalises dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up your return to active rehabilitation.

The main difference between dry needling and acupuncture is the theory behind why the methods work. Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture, although there are similarities between the two techniques. Dry needling is primarily focused on reducing pain and restoring function through the release of myofascial trigger points in the muscle. In comparison, acupuncture focuses on treating medical conditions by restoring the flow of energy (Qi) through critical points in the body (meridians) to restore balance.

GT Physiotherapy uses dry needling for conditions such as arthritis, chronic and acute pain, muscle spasms and tightness, and tendinopathies such as tennis elbow. Dry needling is one of many techniques that we utilise to assist with your rehabilitation. At GT Physiotherapy, we will combine dry needling with other physiotherapy techniques, including massage, manual therapy, and exercise prescription.
